The
National
Road
Safety
Commission
is
to
roll
out
a
new
regulation
from
next
year
to
compel
commercial
drivers
to
join
a
trade
union
or
risk
sanctions.
According
to
the
Commission,
the
new
regulation
is
to
sanitize
and
rid
the
system
of
floating
drivers
who
usually
cause
accidents
on
the
roads.
Minister
of
Transport
Kwaku
Ofori
Asiamah
disclosed
this
when
he
spoke
at
the
11th
Quadrennial
Delegates
Conference
of
Ghana
Private
Road
Transport
Union
(GPRTU)
at
Gomoa
Fetteh
in
the
Central
Region
on
July
4,
2024.
“From
next
year
going,
whoever
will
drive
commercial
vehicle
and
does
not
belong
to
any
union,
we
will
not
give
you
the
chance
to
drive”.
“Let
us
all
support
them,
whoever
is
seeking
the
good
of
society
should
be
supported
and
when
we
are
patient
with
them
it
helps,
because
without
it
we
will
have
problems
and
I
know
you
are
aware
of
how
some
of
your
colleague
drivers
behave”.
“For
instance,
if
they
are
moving
to
Kasoa,
they
will
pick
from
Accra
to
Kaneshie
and
they
will
make
another
stop
over
at
every
point.
So,
when
they
all
join
the
union
all
these
things
will
end,”
he
said.
