Mason
Greenwood’s
potential
transfer
to
Marseille
has
hit
a
snag
as
the
city’s
mayor,
Benoit
Payan,
has
publicly
condemned
the
move.
Manchester
United
reportedly
agreed
to
a
£26.7
million
deal
with
the
French
club,
but
personal
terms
are
yet
to
be
finalized.
Greenwood
was
suspended
by
United
in
January
2022
following
allegations
of
assault
and
threats
to
kill.
While
the
charges
were
dropped
in
February
2023,
the
situation
has
left
a
mark.
Mayor
Payan
has
expressed
strong
disapproval,
stating,
“I
do
not
want
my
club
to
be
covered
in
shame.
It
is
not
acceptable.”
He
reportedly
plans
to
speak
with
the
club’s
president
in
an
attempt
to
block
the
transfer.
Greenwood
has
denied
all
allegations.
He
spent
last
season
on
loan
at
Getafe
and
scored
10
goals
in
36
appearances.
